Wills and Estate
Death certainly comes to everyone. What is not certain is whether the intention of a person will be honoured after the person's death. If you die without a will in Ontario, the uncertainty will replace your wishes and the relevant law such as the Succession Law Reform Act and the Estate Administration Act will apply. Your assets will be divided among your relatives, typically after deducting certain costs that could be avoided with a proper planning, in accordance with the law and the estate may be tied up in the courts until any outstanding issues are fully resolved.
Not everything you own becomes part of your estate. Life insurance proceeds may be paid directly to a beneficiary named in the policy. If you have houses, properties, bank accounts or other assets in joint ownership, they will automatically pass to the other owner(s) who survive you.
